Aww thank you so much!!! Ahaha, no, back when I still tried to write tuts my policy was always only individual icon tutorials, because I ramble so much that even those become super long, so a guide would make like a 100-page Word document I guess xD also I'm not sure I have anything interesting to say that isn't out there in many old text guides, buuut that being said a lot of old guides suffer from Photobucket's sabotage, so maybe there would actually be a need for a new one? I'll think about it, it would be a fun thing to do, but not sure where to find the time!
1 is indeed from Parks&Rec, and 3 from Farscape. I should start labeling these!
Yeah that Photobucket sabotage has a lot to answer for unfortunately :/
To be honest I'd just love to know what fonts you use, and how you decide what words to put or how to arrange them. Do you already have a quote/phrase/word in mind when you start an icon, or do you add the text later as an embellishment?
I'm just slightly obsessive about having icons labelled with both maker and fandom - I keep getting into old fandoms and it's useful to be able to search by fandom to find icons that I saved in the past without watching the show/film.
Hmm, thinking of these questions actually gives me some ideas. Maybe I should do a guide. But in case I don't find the time, some quick thoughts:
Fontwise I really like clear fonts that work on almost any icon, my favorites are plain old Arial Black and Times New Roman, so fontwise I'd say I'm pretty boring :D oh, I just remembered that I actually do have an ooooold font rec page here, but it has questionable value cause it doesn't even have any download links -.- and also because I definitely wasn't any good at text in 2012. But still, I see many fonts recced there that I still like.
As for the process, I like to rewatch an episode before making an icon. If I already now that I feel like making a text icon, I take notes during the episode and write down memorable quotes (or other icon ideas in case they pop up, e.g. for composition or interesting moments to icon). This is a massive help for making text icons. This way I start with a text in mind and then can sort of imagine the finished arrangement before picking a cap, then go caphunting with a mission in mind (like searching for a close profile or a full body cap). This is how I'd ideally like to icon so that I don't run into the usual problem of "this needs text but the text I have in mind doesn't fit anywhere in what I already have on the icon", or "this needs text but I can't think of any". However this is veeery slow, so I only recommend it if you feel like rewatching old favoriteds anyway for other reasons too.
So that's the very short answer to some of your questions but now that I started talking about it I do want to write more, I'll see what I can do :>
Thank you so much for doing this, and for the link!
Oh I wish I had time to rewatch all the things I want to icon, but alas, never enough time in the world! It's a great idea to take notes as you watch though - I definitely do sometimes see a scene/shot that I think would make a great icon but I almost always forget about it when I come to icon that show/film.
Mind if I ask how you decide on the text composition? It's always in such elaborate and creative combinations of shaping/warping/font combinations or arrangements!
Ok so I've been trying to think about an answer to text compositions, but honestly I'm coming up blank here, it's so case by case and so largely guided by intuition rather than any well thought out choices that it's hard to sort of condense that process into any kind of generalized rules. If I ever get to making a full guide, the text arrangement question will definitely be the main focus, cause it is by far the most difficult part, but I'll really need to pay more attention to how I even do it cause it's really all just "try and see what works"... but I'll let you know if I find any common logic there :p Sorry I can't be more helpful at this time, I really tried to think of a more useful answer!
Thank you so much for the lovely comment!! DW (especially 12's seasons) is one of my favorite subjects to icon, there's so much interesting stuff there :)
